Betty Mitchell

October 23, 1932 — February 26, 2021

BETTY J. MITCHELL

Betty Jo Mitchell, 88, of Pleasant Hill, was born October 23, 1932, in Harrisonville to Charles Fredrick and Una Leona Belle Bunger. She departed this life and entered eternity, Friday, February 26, 2021, at her home surrounded by love and family. She was sung into Heaven listening to Victory in Jesus by Steven Casey.

Betty grew up in Harrisonville where she played basketball all four years of high school. She also spent many hours at the local skating rink. Even after she was married she continued to impress her kids with her twirls and backward skating abilities. She caught the eye of a young Pleasant Hill boy at the Harrisonville bus station and after Betty graduated in May she and Arlen were married June 8, 1950 in the First Baptist Church parsonage in Pleasant Hill.

Betty worked at various part time jobs at several local businesses including the King Lewie Garment Factory, Gerbes Super Market, Staffords Hardware, Grays Hardware, and Colonial Hatchery. Mostly she worked hard at being a great supportive wife and mother. She spent hours refinishing old pieces of furniture and turning them into things of beauty, many of which are still in their home. She sewed clothing and bedding, and upholstered furniture. She could rewire, wallpaper, lay carpet, or most anything else that an old farm house needed. She could walk on stilts, shoot baskets, ride a bike, or just sit down and give you a listening ear if you needed it.

Betty was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church, a past member of the Happy Homemakers, and the Friends Group.  Throughout all of her years her first devotion was to the Lord. Whether it was singing in the choir, teaching a Sunday school class, or teaching vacation bible school her faith was shown without question. Her prayer list was a mile long.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Fredrick Mitchell; and one grandson, Logan Gray

She is survived by her husband, Arlen; two sons, Gary (and Catherine) Mitchell and Richard Mitchell; one daughter, Susie (and Darrell) Gray; four grandsons, Tracy Mitchell, Chris (and Debbie) Mitchell, Jacob Mitchell and Levi Mitchell; one granddaughter, Elizabeth (and fiancé Andy Holt) Krulish; five great grandchildren, Tristan, Faith, Chloe, Cayden, and Brock; one sister, Frances Gunn; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday March 4, 2021 at the funeral home. Pastor Robert Harnden officiated. Private burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Dennis Bunger, Tracy Mitchell, Chris Mitchell, Jake Mitchell, Levi Mitchell, and Andy Holt. Honorary casket bearers were Lloyd Ross and Junior Ross.  Visitation was held one prior to the service.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Hill Education Foundation in memory of Logan Gray and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
