Carolyn S. McCoy

Sep 23, 1940 — Oct 12, 2026

Pleasant Hill, Missouri

Carolyn Sue McCoy, 86, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at the Kansas City Hospice House, following several months of fierce determination after a stroke in May and other complications. She was surrounded by her immediate family, while her devoted husband Glen held her hand. Carolyn (and fondly referred to as “Hauntie” by some of her nieces and nephews) will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and devotion to family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

Carolyn was born September 23, 1940, in Lexington, Virginia, to the late Pearl Peery Hufferd. Interestingly, Carolyn was born in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (1906-1954), which previously had been his home; it now is the Jackson House Museum. As a young girl, she relocated with part of her family to Lee Summit, Missouri, where she lived the rest of her life.

Carolyn went to Lone Jack and Hazel Grove (on Unity grounds) Grade Schools and continued her education in the Lee's Summit school district where she graduated in 1958. She briefly worked for a lawyer as a secretary when she was just a senior in high school. Right after graduation, Carolyn worked at Unity Village for 19 years, first as a secretary, then as an administrative assistant for the Association of Unity Churches (AUC).

Carolyn and Glen McCoy were married on March 20, 1961. Their first and only child Curtis was born on October 5, 1961, two months premature. He was always their pride and joy and was showered with unconditional love, but never spoiled, per se. They raised him to be a responsible and respectable individual.

Carolyn’s love for the field of administrative assistant continued to a long and successful position at Research Medical Center that started in 1977. She spent many years in the Fundraising Dept. Carolyn worked as an administrator to doctors for the Center of Infectious Diseases, serving Research for 32 years until her retirement in 2002. She loved what she did and was known for her professionalism, and she was admired and respected by her peers.

Carolyn was a confident, take-charge, but refined, responsible and classy lady, who always had impeccable taste and radiant style, from her clothing to her home, and blue was her favorite color. Carolyn built a life centered on service, hard work, and love for her family, but she also had fun and enjoyed life. She enjoyed the tradition of shopping ("stomping concrete", as it was called) on Saturdays for 62 years with the immediate female family clan, riding the motorcycle with Glen, traveling, tending to her flowers, gardening and canning everything from their garden which she often shared with others. She had a talent for painting and drawing, loved John Wayne, westerns, “The Waltons”, “Little House on the Prairie”, crocheting and reading, especially historical books. She organized and hosted family holidays, meals and reunions for many years, gave wise yet careful advice, and made time for frequent phone calls to check in on family and friends. Her memory will live on in the lessons she taught and the love she gave so freely.

She is survived by her adoring and beloved husband of 65 years, Glen McCoy; her treasured son, Curt (and Kathy) McCoy; her cherished grandson, Jake (and Lane) McCoy and their beautiful children, Olivia, who brought her immense joy, Maddox and Luke; and her dearest sister, Joyce Decker. She is also survived by several other valued nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Don Peery and Fred Peery.

Cremation has been accorded.

A Funeral Liturgy Outside of Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the Lone Jack Cemetery at a later date with immediate family. There will be no visitation.
