Donald Wayne Byrd, 85, of Pleasant Hill, was born April 25, 1940, in Pleasant Hill, the son of Colie Walter and Della Ann (Ford) Byrd. He departed this life Thursday, November 20, 2025, in Harrisonville surrounded by loving family.
Don was employed as Distribution Center Manager for Cotter & Company in Mankato, Minnesota and later in Kansas City where he retired at age 59. After retirement he enjoyed life with his wife Beverly on their small hobby farm. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Assembly of God Church. He was a manager for the Pleasant Hill little league baseball and football programs. He, with the help of his coach, Dub McCauley, led their teams to 8 baseball championships in seven years. In his early years, Don enjoyed playing and singing with the Donnie Byrd Band, in later years he enjoyed playing and singing in church and with family.
Along with Beverly, Don found great joy in turning their hobby farm into a haven for their grandchildren complete with a merry-go-round, go carts, hunting, fishing, chickens, and clubhouse.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Della; one brother, Melvin Byrd; three sisters, Charlotte Phillips, Evelyn Woodrome, and Beulah Spainhour. He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Kansas City; two children, Kevin Byrd of Harrisonville, and Kimberly (and Larry) Spiess of Simpsonville, South Carolina; nine grandchildren, Eric (and Des) Byrd, Ashley (and Dustin) Young, Ryan (and Emma) Byrd, Briar Byrd, Caleb Byrd, Wyatt Byrd, Tiffani (and Joshua) Crawford, Donny (and Gretchen) Spiess, and Josh (and Erica) Spiess; fifteen great-grandchildren; two siblings, Dan (and Jan) Byrd of Pleasant Hill, and Faye Pauls of Richland Center, Wisconsin; other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Pastor and longtime friend, Lynn Stroup will officiate. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers are Tiffani Crawford, Donny Spiess, Josh Spiess, Eric Byrd, Ashley Young, and Ryan Byrd. Honorary bearers are Briar Byrd, Caleb Byrd, and Wyatt Byrd.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the CFC Foundation and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
