Elgin Brandes

ELGIN C. BRANDES

Elgin Carl Brandes, 82, of Pleasant Hill, was born, August 14, 1938, in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of Elgin J. and Charlotte L. (Pelzmann) Brandes.  He departed this life, Tuesday, October, 13, 2020, at the Kansas City Hospice House.

He was a 1958 graduate of the Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, West Virginia.  He went on to serve in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged in 1967.

On November 30, 1998, he was united in marriage to Katherine E. Gray in Miami, Oklahoma.

Elgin owned and operated Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Chanute, Iola, Independence, and Parsons.  He had also owned several other family restaurants through the U.S.   After moving to Pleasant Hill he was employed at Calmar in Lee’s Summit.   He was artistic applying his gift to crafting, wood burning, decoupage, wall art and flower arranging.  He was also an excellent cook and enjoyed fishing, and watching football, golf, and boxing.

Elgin was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Karleen Frey, and one son, Paul Brandes.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy of the home; six children, Elgin “Skip” Brandes, Jr., of Bokeelia, Florida, Jim Brandes of Perry, Oklahoma, Kathleen (and Paul) DeTore of St. Petersburg, Florida, Julie (and Mark) Ditzel of Spring Hill, Florida, Aaron Brandes and Derek Brandes, both of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma;  grandchildren, Dillon Brandes, James (and Melanie) Brandes, Megan Sierra Rivera, Mary (and Kyle) Calkin, Allison DeTore, Evelyn DeTore, Luke Ditzel, Daxton Day, and Gavin Brandes; five great grandchildren, Cayden, Jackson, Everett, Bradley, and Hillary; two stepchildren, Chris Yates and Marsha (and Jose) Villareal , both of Overland Park;  step grandchildren,  Ella Yates, Owen Yates, Kaylee Villareal, and Annabelle Villareal;  one sister, Lynne Addleman of Lee’s Summit; other relatives and friends.

Per his wishes cremation has been accorded.  Private family services will be held at a later date.
