Harold Russell Neill, Jr., 81, lifelong resident of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born, September 19, 1941, at the Tucker Hotel in Pleasant Hill, the son of Harold R. and Edna Belle (Funston) Sr. He departed this life, Sunday, December 18, 2022, at his home surrounded with love and family.
Harold attended Pleasant Hill High School but left early in his senior year to join the workforce. He attended the Highway Patrol Academy where he tested second highest in his class.
On July 27, 1962, he was united in marriage to Sharon Marie Atkinson in Pleasant Hill.
He had been employed as a delivery driver for the Wallace Casket Company, as a driver for the A.D. Mohr greenhouse, as a Police Officer for the City of Pleasant Hill, as City Constable of Pleasant Hill, served as a Firefighter on the Pleasant Hill fire department, worked security for the Kansas City Sports Authority and the Kansas City Chiefs, and as the department manager for the Gerbes Supermarket in Pleasant Hill retiring in 1996. He was also very active and selfless in the county and community. He was instrumental in starting the first public ambulance service in Pleasant Hill, served as a Director for the Pleasant Hill Ambulance Board, was a member of the Pleasant Hill Civil Defense, director of both the Cass County and Pleasant Hill emergency management; was a member of the Broadway Village Board, served on the city council, was a member of the Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster response team, Cass County Auxiliary Sheriff, Cass County Democrat Committee Chairman for Precinct #2, the Cass County Elks Lodge, and the Independent order of the Foresters. He also enjoyed hunting pheasant and quail and buying and selling cars.
More than anything Harold was proud of his family and worked hard to provide for them.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Sheila M. Pemberton on May 19, 2018.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Pleasant Hill; two sons and their wives, Russell and Kim Neill of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Jamie and Mandy Neill of Holden, Missouri; ten grandchildren, Amber Pemberton of Holden, Phillip (and Amanda) Pemberton of Holden, Tyler (and Heather) Neill Fisher of Independence, Jacob Mitchell of Pleasant Hill, Josie (and Sean) Crane of Covington, Kentucky, Morgan (and fiancé Hailey) Pemberton of Holden, Dakota (and Shelby) Neill of Holden, Colton (and Madolyn) Neill of Springfield, Charlene Neill of Holden, and Josh Neill of Holden; twelve great grandchildren, Wyatt Pemberton, Alex Hall of Odessa, Peyton Pemberton, Jared Pemberton, Axel Pemberton, Harper Pemberton, Xavier Loving, Carter Lairson, Jonah Neill, Hazel Neill, Sophie Pemberton, and Mackenzie Pemberton; three brothers, Bobby Neill, Donnie Neill, and Jerry Neill all of Pleasant Hill; other relatives and friends.
Visitation and funeral services were held Friday, December 23, 2022, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Reverend Travis Webb of the Enon Baptist Church in Holden officiated. A Bell Ceremony with funeral honors was conducted by the Missouri EMS Funeral Response Team. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Tyler Fisher, Colton Neill, Joshua Neill, Morgan Pemberton, Phillip Pemberton, and Terry Wilson. Honorary casket bearers were Roger Lowry, Dwight McCullar, Jacob Mitchell, Butch Neill, Dakota Neill, Donnie Neill, and Jack Rinker.
Memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
