Homer Lee Foote, Jr., 88, of Harrisonville, was born August 10, 1934, in Pleasant Hill, the son of Homer L. and Jessie (Blank) Foote, Sr. He departed this life, Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the St. Luke’s East Hospital surrounded with love and family.

Homer attended Pleasant Hill School through his sophomore year but left early at the age of 17 to join the Marine Corps. He proudly served in the Marines during the Korean War. He was baptized in La Jolla, California in 1952.  While in the Marines, he earned his G.E.D. and upon returning home entered the Kansas City Police Academy. He also attended the Central Missouri State University Criminal Justice Program.  

On March 27, 1970, he was united in marriage to Alma O. James in Miami, Oklahoma.  They enjoyed over 53 years of marriage.  

Homer was first employed as a police officer for the Kansas City Police Department. In 1985, he was elected Sheriff of Cass County, Missouri and served the county honorably for eight years.  Following his time as sheriff he was employed as a truck driver for Yellow Freight and was a member of Union Local #41.  He attended the Grand River Baptist Church in Freeman.  He was member of the Missouri Sheriff’s Association, the Missouri Peace Officers Association, the Fraternal Order of the Police; Jewel Lodge #480, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons–Pleasant Hill, Order of the Eastern Star Ivy Leaf Chapter #215–Pleasant Hill, and was a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118-Pleasant Hill.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and working on his farm. He loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Homer was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He held steadfast to the principles of law enforcement while serving as a police officer and as sheriff of Cass County and will be long remembered for his dedication to his officers and to the public that he swore to serve and protect.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents; two son’s Homer L. Foote, III and Jeffrey L. Foote; and three brothers, Jerry Foote, William Foote, and Larry Foote.  

He is survived by his wife, Alma Foote of Harrisonville; two children, Dustin (and Laura) Foote of Pleasant Hill and Devra (and Ray) Jordan of Harrisonville; four grandchildren, Beckilee (and Logan) Huitt and  Sarah (and Austin) Huitt both of Pleasant Hill, Jess (and Tim) Vogel of Peculiar, and Cale Francis of Lubbock, Texas; six great grandchildren, Gaige, Paislee, Caroline, Berklee, Hunter, and Lane.

Visitation was held Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the funeral home where the Cass County Sheriff’s Honor Guard stood watch.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the funeral home.  Pastor Mark Conway officiated.  Masonic services were conducted by Right Worshipful brother, George Barrios and a Final Salute was rendered by Past Commander Ron Beattie and the  V.F.W. Post #3118 members. 

Graveside military services and interment were conducted by the United States Marine Corps and the V.F.W. Post #3118 Honor Guard. Casket bearers were Cale Francis, Austin Huitt, Logan Huitt, Tim Vogel, Tommy Cook, and Travis Parris.  Honorary bearers were Larry Duncan, Wayne Armintrout, Howard Cox, Dwight Diehl, Pete Lovenz, Fred Burns, Ray Miller, Aaron Francis, and Lorraine Cook.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Hill V.F.W. Post #3118 and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
