Joseph Dewey McCommon Jr., 82, of Pleasant Hill, was born May 3, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Joseph D. and Mary R. (Holman) McCommon II. He departed this life Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at his home.
Dewey attended Humes High School in Memphis but left early to join the military.
On December 3, 1962, he was united in marriage to Marcele K. Deterding in Lee’s Summit.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and the Army National Guard serving in Engineer Maintenance on the Nike Base near Pleasant Hill.
Following his time in the military he attended the Greer Technical Institute for Professional Truck Driving, Metropolitan Community College earning a certificate in Heating and Air Conditioning, the Adult Vocational Technical School earning a certificate for the National Electric Code and was a member of the Electrical Maintenance Engineers and Associates of Greater Kansas City where he completed the Electrical Maintenance Course.
Dewey was employed as an Electrician starting his career at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, then General Motors; later transferring to the Union Pacific and B.N.S.F Railroads and finishing his career at the Kansas City V.A. Hospital. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Union Local #124. He was a member of the Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill where he served as Elder and Usher. When his children were young, he was a scout leader for Cub Scout Pack #300 in Pleasant Hill and both he and Marcele were church youth group leaders He also enjoyed scrapping and fabricating metal as well as spending time outdoors.
Above all Dewey enjoyed spending time with family and was always willing to help those in need in his church or the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Linda McCommon, Lanny McCommon, and Rene Teague; and a son-in-law, Gary Rousseau.
He is survived by his wife Marcele of Pleasant Hill; his children, Candy (and Mutt) Schmoll of Pleasant Hill, Angel (and Doug) Romi of Lee’s Summit, Dicky (and Stacy) McCommon of Greenwood, Crystal Rousseau of Stafford, Virginia, Doug (and Vicki) McCommon of Pleasant Hill, Melony (and Aaron) Ball of Hutchinson, Kansas, Sabian Taylor of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Harley (and Briana) Teague of Pleasant Hill; nineteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Hammond of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Gwen McCommon of Archie; other relatives and friends.
Cremation has been accorded.
All services will be held Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 NE Chipman Rd, Lee's Summit, MO 64063.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Robert Malone will officiate.
Graveside military services and inurnment will be held 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the United States Army and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118 Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, Pleasant Hill, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
