James "Jim" Angel, 89, of Lee's Summit, formerly of Lenexa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Raintree Village. He was born on November 5, 1935, in Mason City, Iowa, to Seymour and Ruth (Scott) Angel.
Jim graduated from Mason City High School in 1953 and went on to study at North Iowa Area Community College. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and the Iowa National Guard.
In 1957, Jim married the love of his life, Beverly Swenson, in Mason City. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.
Jim's career took him from working on the railroad as a fireman and engineer for the Chicago Northwestern & Milwaukee Road, to a long and fulfilling career as an electrical engineer with AT&T in Kansas City.
He was a long-time member of Hillcrest Christian Church in Overland Park, where he found great joy singing in the choir and connecting with the community. Jim was also a proud Freemason and a Shriner. He loved reading, big band music, the NY Times crossword and was a steam railroad enthusiast. Jim was so proud to write a book with his granddaughter Ashley, titled Steam Railroads of Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota.
Jim had a heart as generous as they come. He went out of his way to help others, always ready with a kind word, a warm smile, or a thoughtful gesture. Whether you knew him well or just in passing, Jim had a way of making people laugh with his silly jokes and big smile.
Jim’s kindness, wisdom, and strength will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Most of all, Jim loved his family deeply and cherished every moment spent with them.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved daughter, Carolyn Ann Mantooth.
Jim leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Beverly; his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and John Cline of Lee’s Summit; two grandchildren, Ashley Mantooth (and David Bozich) and Katie Mantooth (and Ryan Gehring); three great-grandchildren, Isla Gehring, Anavey Bozich and Bowie Bozich, and many extended family and dear friends.
A visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m., both at Hillcrest Christian Church, 11411 Quivira Rd., Overland Park, Kansas. Rev. Dr. Lara Blackwood Pickrel will officiate. Jim will be laid to rest with full military honors at Shawnee Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
