Joe Campbell Johnson, 89, of Mansfield, Missouri, was born March 14, 1934, in Hardy, Arkansas, the son of Leonard William and Pauline Willie (Campbell) Johnson.  He departed this life Monday, January 22, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Joe was a 1952 Mansfield High School graduate. He furthered his education at the David Lipscomb University, an affiliate of the Church of Christ, in Nashville, Tennessee.

He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran.  While serving he was a member of the Marine Aircraft Wing Marching Band.

On July 21, 1956, he was united in marriage to Shirley Faye Pinley in Mansfield; she preceded him in death on October 31, 2011.  On December 2, 2021, he was united in marriage to Cleo I. (Dennis) Chambers in Hartville, Missouri; she survives.

Joe was a Church of Christ Minister. He served the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ from 1976 to 1986.   He had also served churches in Butler, Harrisonville, Independence, Clearmont, as well as churches in Oil City, Louisiana, and England, Arkansas.  He also worked as an agent for the Ford Motor Company in Chicago and the Prudential Life Insurance Company.  He was a member of the Mansfield Church of Christ. Growing up he was a gifted athlete who loved playing basketball and baseball.  As a teenager he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals, made the team, but was later cut when they found out that he was only 16.  He enjoyed all sports and served as a scout and chaplain for many high school teams.  He was good natured, loved to give his family a hard time, and loved his life.

Joe was also preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Joy Johnston, earlier in the month.

He is survived by four children, Jill (and Lyle) Rosanbalm of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Joel (and Lori) Johnson of Blue Springs, Missouri, Bethany (and Nick) Schwartz of Waterloo, Illinois, and Josh Johnson of Blue Springs; son-in-law, Dale Johnston of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Brittany Johnston, Adrienne Johnston, Ethan Johnston, John (and Jodi) Rosanbalm, Amber Johnson, Caleb (and Brittni) Johnson, Jake Schwartz, Jenna Schwartz, and Joe Schwartz; two siblings, Rita Krizan and Mike Johnson, both of Springfield, Missouri; other relatives and friends.  

Visitation and funeral services were held Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ.  Mr. Earl Fultz officiated. Graveside military services and interment followed at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the the United States Marine Corps and the V.F.W. Post #3118 Honor Guard.  Casket bearers were Ethan Johnston, John Rosanbalm, Caleb Johnson, Jake Schwartz, Joe Schwartz, and Josh Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Mercy Hospital or the National Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
