Mary Nell Hinton, 86, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, was born January 3, 1940, in Sturgis, Kentucky, the daughter of John A. and Velda (Sullivan) Hooper. She departed this life, Monday, August 3, 2026, at Lee’s Summit Medical Center surrounded with love and family.
Mary grew up in Grove Center, Ky. and attended school in Sturgis, Ky. On December 17, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert Brown Hinton in Henshaw, Ky and to
this union four children, Donna, Brenda, Janet, and Robert “Shannon” were born. Robert preceded her in death on November 24, 2007.
Mary was a homemaker. She was a member of the Henshaw Christian Church. She enjoyed crafting, shopping, eating out, and playing bingo. She also enjoyed being outside, the Royals, and was an avid Chiefs fan. Above all she loved her family and cherished time spent with them.
Mary was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James A. “Shorty” Hooper; one sister, Betty Shockley; one grandson, Michael Looney; and one son-in-law Glen Johnson.
She is survived by her children, Donna Brown (and Chris Roach) of Mobile, Alabama, Brenda Johnson of Rich Hill, Missouri, Janet (and John) Berry of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Shannon (and Jill) Hinton of Bates City, Missouri, and a bonus son, Rick (and Nancy) Hinton of Madill, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, Jeremy Looney, William O’Dell, Jason O’Dell, John Berry III, Jeremy Berry, Jennifer Gunderson, Bailey Story, Brittany Hinton, and Brady Hinton; 20 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two siblings, Anna Joyce Stivers of Cincinnati, Ohio and Rita Payne of Sarasota, Florida; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Visitation and funeral services were held Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the funeral home. Pastor James Stanfield-Myers officiated. A rose presentation was conducted by Jennifer Gunderson, Bailey Story, Brittany Hinton, and Brady Hinton. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Jeremy Berry, John Berry, Caleb Looney, Jeremy Looney, Zach Looney, Billy O’Dell, Jason O’Dell, and Matthew O’Dell. Honorary casket bearers were Hoolie Benge and Stan Smith.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Havenwood, Inc. and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
