Melvin Otis Mayfield, 83, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born Thursday, July 18, 1929 in Rosston, Oklahoma, the son of William Floyd and Letha May (Wilmot) Mayfield. He departed this life at 7:28 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012 at the Lee's Summit Medical Center surrounded with love and family.

Mel served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa Japan during the Korean War. He was a Marine Pipefitter and earned the Rank of Airman First Class. He received the National Defense Medal, the Korea Service Medal, and the UN Service Medal.

On February 23, 1957, he was united in marriage to Darlene Wilson in Miami, Oklahoma.

Mel was a gifted and well known plumber in Pleasant Hill. He owned and operated Mayfield Plumbing for over 40 years. He was a Life Member of the Pleasant Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118; and was instrumental in the construction of the Post building in the late 1960's.

Mel fought a courageous battle against prostate cancer for the last four years without many knowing and never once a complaint.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers Clifford Mayfield, Elmer Mayfield, and Benny Mayfield.

Mel is survived by his wife Darlene of the home; two sons Roger (Dana) Mayfield of Pleasant Hill, and Richard (Cathy) Mayfield of Moberly, Missouri; one daughter Beverly (Steve) Chesney of Freeport, Illinois; 7 grandchildren; Vincent, Andrew, Alaina, Andrew, Alicia, Cassie, and Andrea; 1 great granddaughter, Isabella; two brothers Ralph (Christine) Mayfield of Warsaw, Missouri, and James (Janice) Mayfield of Lexington, Missouri; three sisters Lucille Brewer of Lenexa, Kansas, Ines Lipperd of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Doris Berry of Leawood, Kansas; two sister-in-laws Una Del Mayfield of Adrian, Missouri, and Fern Mayfield of Huntington Beach, California; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the funeral home. Reverend Todd MacLean of the Big Creek Baptist Church officiated. A Final Salute was provided by members of VFW Post #3118. Graveside military services and inurnment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The graveside military services were performed by the Pleasant Hill VFW Post #3118 Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Hill VFW Post #3118 - Veterans Welfare Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
