Mike Porter

August 8, 1947 — May 1, 2018

JERRY M. PORTER

Jerry Mikel Porter, 70, of Blue Springs, Missouri, was born August 8, 1947, in Troy, Iowa, the fifth son of Harry C. and I. Maxine (Steele) Porter. He departed this life Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at his home.

Mike was a 1966 Davis County, Iowa, high school graduate and was a United States Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era.

On May 7, 1967, he was united in marriage to Jane Ann Fite at the Bethlehem Church in Davis County, Iowa.  She preceded him in death on January 31, 2017.

They traveled together, living in Virginia and in Colorado, before moving to the Kansas City area and settling in the then still growing Blue Springs. Mike was a supportive member of the community and the growing municipal government and eventually began his business, Heartland Agency, in the city. He was a member of the Missouri Collectors Association, serving on its board and contributing to its fraternal life during his time as a business owner. He retired from entrepreneurship and drove a school bus in Grain Valley R-5 school district. Mike took great enjoyment in interacting with the children and pride in being part of the children’s support structure of adults.

He was a history buff, with a deep love for 19th century American history. Fishing brought a sense of calm in the outdoors for him and he never loved it more then when it was on his parents’ farm or at his brother’s lake cabin. Mike did not play sports in his adult years but would never pass up an opportunity to watch a ballgame.

He is survived by two daughters, Melissa (and Jason) Carle of Overland Park, and Lillianna Porter of Blue Springs; two grandchildren, Roslyn Carle and Sam Carle of Overland Park; three brothers, Bary Porter of Pleasant Hill, Terry Porter of California, and Danny Porter of Colorado; one sister, Mary Briggs of Hannibal; other relatives and friends.

Mike was also preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Harry Porter and Gary Porter.

A cremation has been accorded.
