ROBERTA E. (GEORGE) MARTIN

Roberta Estelle (George) Martin, 84, lifelong resident of Pleasant Hill, was born, May 30, 1936, in Pleasant Hill, the daughter of Robert T. and Ruth L. (Chandler) George.  She departed this life peacefully in the presence of the Holy Spirit on November 20, 2020, at her home - surrounded with love and family.

Roberta was a 1954 Pleasant Hill High School graduate. She later earned a General Business Degree from the Kansas City Business College.

On May 4, 1956, she was united in marriage to Hugh Allen Patterson at the First Christian Church in Pleasant Hill; they divorced in August 1973.  On February 23, 1979, she was united in marriage to Raymond D. Martin in Miami, Oklahoma; he preceded her in death on June 15, 2019.

Roberta started her working career at the People’s Theater in downtown Pleasant Hill, later working for the City Service Gas Company, Western Electric, Cotter & Company and the Lake City Ammunition Plant.  In 1974, after earning her General Business Degree from the Kansas City Business College, she went to work for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, retiring in 1994.  She was an active member of the Pleasant Hill First Christian Church where she served on the Diaconate; was past Worthy Matron of Ivy Leaf Chapter #215 Order of the Eastern Star, and was Past President of V.F.W. Post #3118, Women’s Auxiliary.  She loved country western music and dancing, bowling, was a great cook, enjoyed playing the piano, singing in the church choir, and was an avid reader of romance novels.  She loved her family tremendously and lived vicariously through her children and grandchildren.  They were all her “babies”.

Roberta was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Robert Lee George and James Carl George; and one sister-in-law, Ethel M. George.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Allen and Dawnn Patterson of Lee’s Summit; her daughter, Julia Lynn Patterson-Johnson of Pleasant Hill; 4 grandchildren, Dr. Zachary A. (and Melissa) Patterson of Pleasant Hill, Sarah R. (and Brayden) Lundeen of Topeka, Kansas, Chase Patterson-Johnson of Pleasant Hill, and Jared D. (and Katy) Reeves of Athens, Georgia; 7 great grandchildren, Aliceyn M. Patterson, Benson A. Patterson, Cade D. Patterson, Elijah J. Lundeen, Louise C. Reeves, Camilla J. Reeves, and Jay D. Reeves; her sister-in-law, Juanita George of Pleasant Hill; other relatives and friends including her life-long friend, Beverly Jo (Dinges) Clark.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at the funeral home.  Reverend D. Kent Deubner officiated.  Casket bearers were Dr. Zachary Patterson, Aliceyn Patterson, Benson Patterson, Chase Patterson-Johnson, Brayden Lundeen and David Johnson.  Honorary casket bearers were Cade Patterson, Elijah Lundeen, Jared Reeves, Rodney George, Bobby George, Danny George and Kenneth Schirlls.

Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions are suggested to Pleasant Hill First Christian Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
