Wilbur Crayton Beghtol, 89, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born Monday, May 1, 1922 in Eldon, Iowa, the son of John Dewey and Beulah Beatrice (Brown) Beghtol. He departed this life at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2012 at his home surrounded with love and family.
He was a United States Army Veteran having served in Troop F of the 5th Calvary during WWII. He proudly served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations until he was wounded in combat on the Island of Los Negros in the Admiralty Island Chain. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service.
During his yearlong recovery from his injury he met his future wife Louise Nadean Warren and on July 12, 1944, they were united in marriage in Springfield, Missouri.
Early in his career Wilbur was Sergeant of the Guard at the Missouri State Prison in Jefferson City; later he worked as a guard for Western Electric in Lee's Summit. Following his time there, he went to work for the Highway Patrol as a Supervisor of the Driver Examiner, Grandview Unit, retiring in 1983. He was a member of 1st Calvary Division Association, the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club, and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post #3118, Pleasant Hill. He was also a member of the Strasburg Baptist Church, where he was baptized in 2007.
Following retirement he raised Thoroughbreds and raced them in numerous competitions throughout the United States. He and Louise loved to travel and spending time at their Lake Home next to Ann and Barry.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Mildred Bates and one grandson Harry Douglas Porter
He is survived by his wife of over 67 years Louise of the home; his daughter Ann (and Bary) Porter of Pleasant Hill; one grandson Bary Dwayne (and Bob Jackson) Porter of Kansas City; two great grandchildren Austin MacGyver Porter and McKayla Massey, both of Pleasant Hill; one brother John (and Nita) Beghtol of Stanton, Virginia; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 30, 2012, at the funeral home. Pastor Preston Sanders of the Strasburg Baptist Church officiated. Members of the Pleasant Hill VFW Post #3118 performed a "Final Salute" at the funeral home. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post #3118 Honor Guard. Casket bearers were Bob Jackson, Matt Liley, Chad Massey, Austin Porter, Bary Porter, Danny Porter, Dwayne Porter, and Lloyd Ross.
Visitation was held Sunday, January 29, 2012, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Hill Meals on Wheels or the Lay-Clergy Council and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
