Willa Mitchell

September 18, 1938 — April 30, 2017

Willa Dean Mitchell, 78, of Kansas City, formerly of Pleasant Hill, was born, September 18, 1938, in Shrewsbury, Kentucky, the daughter of Everett and Bessie (Mattingly) Davis.  She departed this life Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Garden Terrace of Overland Park, surrounded with love and family.

Dean was a 1956 Caneyville High School graduate.

On March 30, 1957 she was united in marriage to John R. Likins in Robertson County, Tennessee; they later divorced.  On August 8, 1991, she was united in marriage to Walter Mitchell in Las Vegas, Nevada; he preceded her in death on November 9, 2012.

Dean was employed as a Book Keeper for the Farris-Burns Corporation.  She had also been a telephone operator for AT&T and the Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Co., a book keeper for Trane Manufacturing, J.R. Hayes Building Contractors, Bank of Commerce, Thornbury Toys, Liberty National Bank, Atlantic Richfield Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Pillsbury, Townley Hardware, and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.  She was a member of the Big Creek Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill.  She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and enjoying time visiting with family and friends.

Dean was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Charles Davis; and three sisters, Urma Lanham, Georgia Lanham, and Sherry Davis.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Scott Jury; her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Faith Likins; grandchildren, Katie (and Arnold) Coleman and their children Jack and Nora and Maggie (and Tim) Benjamin and their children Daniel and John; two brothers, Eddie Davis, David Davis; five sisters, Verde Vincent, June Davis, Diane Davis, Barbara Eisenbeis, and Susan Wurzel; other relatives; and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 5, 2017, at Big Creek Baptist Church.  Pastor Todd MacLean officiated. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
